Ennui

This is perhaps the subtlest piece I have ever done. This piece makes me smile because it is equally funny and melancholic. I acquired a full-size telephone pole, attached cut wires, and installed the pole along a dirt road in rural Connecticut.

I was interested in art that did not look like art, meaning art that did not draw attention to itself. This piece was about an inability to communicate, of being left behind, of waiting for a literal connection. I inevitably anthropomorphize this piece and imagine that the pole suffers from a variety of neuroses, like separation anxiety.

I subsequently installed a version of this piece at Socrates Sculpture Park.
