Lovers' Point

This was a temporary, site-specific piece for Socrates Sculpture Park in Long Island City in Queens, New York. This park is situated beside the East River but is otherwise a flat, open space with very little dramatic scenery.

In many ways, this project explored how things can insinuate themselves into a setting by looking like they had been there for a long time. I wanted to add just a little drama, a little romance, to an otherwise physically lackluster park. I was interested in art that did not announce itself as "art" in a traditional sense, like a bronze sculpture on a pedestal might.

The rock face was made from plywood on a wood frame that was then covered in concrete fixative and faux-finished. The cliff's shell was then backfilled with dirt and covered with fresh sod.
